ProPublica study finds that many ransomware and data protection companies actually pay the ransom amount to the scammers to give their services to customers. The data protection companies charge the victims more than the ransom amount to pay the scammers. Sometimes a victim itself choose to pay the amount to get rid of ransomware rather than looking for another way.
Coveware, a ransomware protection company, openly runs its business by paying the ransom of almost $12,000 to the hackers. As per Coveware, hackers encrypt the computers of large enterprises with costly ransomware software such as Ryuk, Bitpaymer, and lencrypt. And the victims ask them to unlock their computers.
Proven Data, another ransomware protection company, claims to help ransomware victims with the help of their technology and experience. But ProPublica collected many FBI affidavits against Proven Data which shows that the company takes decryption tools from cyber attackers by paying them ransom amount.
Florida based company, Monster Cloud, also runs its business like Proven Data and the company also assures the victims not to be get attacked with the ransomware again in future. Monster Cloud does not let customers know about paid ransom and claims to use its own decryption tools.
Commonly, ransomware protection companies study the communication pattern of the hackers and make a database. Further, they put their own capacity and experience to deal with the ransomware. Sometimes they get successful to do so. But when they realize the assignment is above their limit, they prefer to negotiate with hackers or scammers.
It is better to hire a team of data specialists when you start your business to avoid ransomware infection in your computers. A ransomware attack is not easy to predict, but by following the safety measures, one can avoid it up to a certain limit.
