Germany has become a major hotspot for micro mobility in the last year. There were 7 startups operating across 37 cities in the country till December 2019. Ford is now launching e-scooter in various cities of Germany.
In the coming Spring season, Ford’s electric scooter company, Spin, is launching its vehicles for the first time outside of the U.S. The company is gearing up to launch ‘Spin’ in Cologne, Germany, followed by other German cities. Post this, people would then be able to buy a scooter (scooter kopen) easily in the select city. In Cologne, Spin will be competing against the likes of Bird, Lime and Circ.
France is also a part of the plan. The company has applied for e-scooter permit in France next month. They are also exploring opportunities in the U.K. for electric scooter sharing.
Spin was a bike-share startup, sold to Ford in November 2018 in a deal worth about $100 million. It plans to deploy its first custom vehicle sometime this year. Right now, its current fleet relies on Segway’s scooter designed for the sharing economy. Spin had raised just $8 million in outside capital prior to the Ford deal.
